Studied classical philology at Berlin and Bonn; 1849 doctorate at Berlin. 1854 schoolteacher at Elberfeld; 1856 prof. ext., 1859 prof. ord. in classical philology at Bern; 1861 prof. at Basel; from 1862 prof. at Kiel; from 1872 prof. at Heidelberg; from 1876 prof. at Leipzig, 1887/88 rector there. Secretary of the Sächsische Gesellschaft der Wissenschaften. Member of the academies of St. Petersburg, Göttingen and Berlin.
