German Hellenist, papyrologist, epigraphist and historian of religion. Born Grenzhausen 7. 6. 1918, died Cologne 28. 7. 2006. After World War II, studied classical philology at Hamburg, doctorate there 1947, 1950–1957 priv.-doz. 1957–1961 prof. at Univ. of Erlangen, 1961–1983 at Univ. of Cologne. Honorary doctorate from Univ. of Besançon. From 1970, member of the Nordrhein-Westfälische Akademie der Wissenschaften.
