Doctorate 1913 at Königsberg; habil. 1920 at Münster. 1923 prof. of classical philology at Greifswald, from 1926 at Basel; from 1931 prof. at Göttingen. Forced to retire 1935. 1945–1957 again prof. at Göttingen, then at Tutzing until his death.
