Born Friedeck in what was then Austrian Silesia (now Frýdek, Czech Rep.) 21. 4. 1890, died Chicago 26. 4. 1968. 1908–1913 Oriental studies at Leipzig. Doctorate 1915, habil. 1920, 1925 prof. ext. in Assyriology, all Leipzig. 1928/29 prof. ord. at Marburg/Lahn; 1929 prof. ord. at Leipzig. 1935 dismissal on racial grounds. 1935–1948 prof. at Ankara; from 1948 prof. at Oriental Institute, Univ. of Chicago [9].
